Macallan The Archival Series – Folio 6
The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then, Macallan has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland – and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.
The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gaelic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan – who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.
The “Archival Series” from Macallan is a limited edition, distillery only release which recreates the old advertising styles of The Macallan.
“Folio 6” is the 6th release in the Archival Series and features the character of The Chairman. He is dressed as a Scotsman dancing the Highland fling over a pen and brush which were the symbols of the distillery’s publicity advisers Holmes and Salaman. The Macallan Chairman Allan Shiach would occasionally suggest ideas to the team and the two departments would often clash. Shiach’s addition of The Chairman character was a polite reminder to his publicity advisers that he would always have the final say.
As with the previous Folio releases, the bottle is presented with a book inside an elegant book-shaped tin box.
Nose: Orange and ginger followed by poached pear and vanilla with cinnamon and nutmeg, fresh oak with a hint of chocolate.
Taste: Orange and sultana with ginger leading to soft milk chocolate.
Finish: Ginger warmth and long.
